6. MEDICAL RISK ASSESSMENTS
In many specific
situations it is prudent or indeed necessary to undertake additional
medical evaluation to assess and address associated risks. This
may be appropriate in jobs such as:
· Fork Lift Truck Drivers
· HGV/LVG drivers
· People with “back pain” performing manual jobs
· People at increased risk of WRULD (work related upper limb
disorder)
Examples
include:
· A folk lift truck generally weighs between one and three
tons and works in confined spaces where it can be a hazard and indeed
a risk to both the driver/operator and people nearby. A considerable
period of time may be spent reversing the vehicle requiring the
operator to look over one or other shoulder. A person who has either
limited neck movement or is blind in one eye may present a serious
impediment to safe working.
· An insulin dependant diabetic may well be unsuited to either
lone working conditions or shift work and the DVLC precludes such
a person from driving HGV vehicles. Each case is judged on its merits
taking into account the individual’s medical history, treatment
plan, etc.
· A person suffering from epilepsy will not be suitable to
work as a rigger/scaffolder.
