Stress Management

4. STRESS MANAGEMENT AND AWARENESS

We have extensive experience in this field. We see anybody with “stress, anxiety and or depression” within two weeks of their going off sick for a rapid assessment. In many cases where our team work closely with clients we may even see these people whilst they are still at work. This is more likely when we have a nominated nurse working with individual clients. We can work with the person, their GP, management and specially chosen experts to work together to define the issues, address them and where appropriate make adjustments in their working pattern in line with current HSE guidance.

Obtaining optimum performance from your workforce, your greatest asset is one of the most significant problems facing commerce and industry in the current climate. People are naturally apprehensive of what they don't understand. Five percent of the population suffer from panic attacks. Over half a million people in the UK were addicted to tranquillisers in 2001 (source BBC, Panorama). How many others are on treatment but not addicted? Modern day living has its share of perceived problems in relationships both at work and outside, financial problems, depression, lack of self-confidence, etc. With increasing impingement on productivity and attendant litigation, this field, it is a key area for a pro-active approach.

Stress Risk Assessment
If they are paid an average salary of £20,000 p.a. this is costing their employer £2 million per annum in direct costs. If one third of these people are actually working at 15% below par because of mild anxiety, depression, financial worries, interpersonal problems either at work or outside. This is equivalent to all of the employees working at 5% below par. In simple terms the company is paying the equivalent of five full time employees £100,000 per annum to make no contribution whatsoever. Clearly this is not good business. Sound anticipatory occupational health management can save you money.

Over the years we have developed techniques for:
· Raising the level of awareness in this area by giving people an understanding of mental health issues with our cartoon based training programmes, including Understanding Stress and Stress Risk Assessment.
· Bringing these issues out "in the open".
Working with both employers and employees to provide assistance in actively managing “stress” related issues has proven cost effectiveness.
