Are your key people e.g. drivers under the influence of substances which may impair their ability to work safely?

This CD Rom presentation was specifically designed to give employees an understanding of substance abuse. This may include alcohol, tobacco, prescription medicines, over the counter medicines and indeed and combination of these e.g. alcohol and antihistamines.

The presentation consists of the following sections:

Introduction
Historical
Alcohol
Drugs, (prescription, "over the counter" and illicit)
Drug testing
The way forward

Dr. O’Sullivan uses the fact that we all now understand that drinking and driving is potentially lethal as a foundation for his message. It can affect concentration, co-ordination, reaction times, etc. Our culture has changed accordingly. Prescription drugs, e.g. antidepressants may affect an individual’s ability to work safely in various jobs. This ability may also be affected by "over the counter" preparations or indeed illicit drugs.

The presentation deals with the process of taking urine samples for drug testing and in particular the "chain of custody" procedure. It also covers issues such as the role of occupational health in the process and in particular the issue of confidentiality.
